What insurance does an AI company actually need?
A short answer, then a way to get exactly those coverages without a sales call. Updated October 2026.
The plain-language coverage guide for AI founders.
What insurance does an AI company need?
Most AI companies end up with five coverages: tech E&O, cyber liability, D&O, EPL, and IP/media liability. Which of the five you need, and at what limits, depends on whether you build models, fine-tune them, or ship AI features on someone else's, how much customer or training data you handle, and your funding stage.

The five coverages most AI companies carry
Each one explained in plain language, with an illustrative claim.
Tech E&O
Responds when a customer alleges your product, including a model's output or recommendation, caused a financial loss. For an AI company it is usually the broadest and most important coverage, because most standard policies were written before generative AI and may exclude AI claims or leave them ambiguous. Illustrative claim: a customer alleges an AI-driven recommendation engine caused a financial loss and seeks damages plus remediation costs.
Cyber Liability
Responds to data breaches, network security failures, ransomware, and the notification and remediation costs that follow. AI companies often process more sensitive data than a typical SaaS business, such as training data, model logs and customer inputs used for fine-tuning. Illustrative claim: a network intrusion exposes a training dataset containing customer records, triggering breach-notification obligations across multiple states.
D&O
Covers claims against your leadership team's decisions, not the product. Investors most often require it as a condition of a financing round, because it protects the board members on your cap table. Illustrative claim: an investor alleges the board misrepresented the company's AI capabilities or technical readiness during a fundraising round.
EPL
Covers claims from employees or former employees, such as wrongful termination, discrimination, and harassment. AI companies scaling headcount quickly, often across multiple states or countries, see exposure grow faster than the org chart suggests. It is standard in most funded-company programs, and frequently added later than it should be.
IP/Media Liability
Responds to claims that your content, model outputs, or the data used to train a model infringed someone else's copyright, trademark, or publicity rights. Illustrative claim: a rights holder alleges a model was trained on, or reproduces output substantially similar to, copyrighted material.

Common questions
What is the difference between Tech E&O and D&O for an AI company?
Tech E&O covers claims that your product or model caused financial harm. D&O covers claims against your leadership team's decisions, such as how the board managed a fundraise or represented the company's technical readiness.
Is cyber insurance different for an AI company?
AI companies often process more sensitive training and customer data than a typical SaaS business, which can justify higher cyber limits and closer underwriting attention to how training data is sourced and secured.
How much does AI company insurance cost?
It depends on revenue, funding stage, and which of the five coverages you select. A broker will send quote options by email after you request access.
What insurance does an AI company actually need?
Most AI companies end up with tech E&O, cyber liability, D&O, EPL, and IP/media liability. Which of the five you need, and at what limits, depends on how you use AI, how much data you handle, and your funding stage.
Why do standard business policies not cover AI claims well?
Most general liability and standard tech policies were drafted before generative AI was in production at scale. Many exclude AI-related claims outright or leave the question ambiguous enough that a carrier can dispute the claim later.
Who places AI company insurance at Alton Risk?
Alton Risk is a commercial insurance brokerage founded in 2026 by former carrier-side underwriters. It places tech E&O, cyber, D&O, EPL and IP/media coverage for AI companies with specialist markets.
